Download Securities Class Action Trends Reports
NERA has been analyzing trends in shareholder class actions for more than 15 years.
Two reports analyzing US trends are published each year: one at mid-year and a second,
annual review published at year end. We are also studying litigation trends around
the world, as the below reports on Japan and Canada illustrate.

The credit crisis and related financial sector turmoil continued to fuel new federal
securities class action filings in 2009, though the pace of these credit crisis
cases slowed in the second-half of the year, according to this newly released edition
of NERA's semi-annual study. The latest edition, Recent Trends in Securities Class Action Litigation: 2009 Year End
Update, shows that securities class action filings are expected
to reach 235 cases in 2009, down from 253 filings in 2008. While filings may have
declined year-over-year in 2009, they still greatly exceed the 130 filings in 2006,
before the start of the credit crisis. Co-authored by Senior Consultant Dr. Stephanie Plancich and Senior Consultant Svetlana Starykh, the study draws from more than
15 years of NERA research on case filings and settlements in securities class actions,
and includes data on filings and dismissals through 30 November 2009, and settlements
through 31 December 2009.

Securities class action filings in Australia set a new record in 2009,
according to a new NERA study that examines for the first time trends
in Australian securities class actions. A key factor in the recent increase
in securities class action filings has been a change in the way securities
class action litigation is funded in Australia, as the emergence of commercial
litigation funding has improved the incentive and ability for investors to
participate in class actions. The study, Trends in Australian Securities
Class Actions: 1 January 1993 -- 31 December 2009,
is co-authored by Director Greg Houston,
Senior Consultant Svetlana Starykh, Analyst Astrid Dahl,
and former NERA Analyst Shane Anderson.
